PRESS RELEASE
Halifax closer to aquarium as Back to the Sea Society releases call for feasibility study vendors
Dartmouth, NS, February 24th, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Halifax Regional Municipality is closer to getting a permanent aquarium that will showcase the amazing creatures found in Atlantic Canada’s coastal waters. Today, Back to the Sea Society issued a request for proposals (RFP) for the completion of a feasibility study related to the proposed Back to the Sea Aquarium. The Society is looking to build a community aquarium that will showcase local marine life.
Back to the Sea Society is a charitable organization dedicated to sparking curiosity for marine life and fostering a desire to protect our ocean. They operate the Touch Tank Hut, a miniature marine interpretive centre located at Alderney Landing in Downtown Dartmouth.
Like the Touch Tank Hut, the aquarium will be based on a “collect-hold-and-release” philosophy, where local, shallow-dwelling specimens are collected, displayed for a season and then released. It will bring hands-on learning opportunities for both locals and tourists to engage with the marine life found in Atlantic Canada’s ocean playground.
Serving as a pilot project, the Touch Tank Hut has already welcomed over 10,000 visitors. Building on this momentum, Back to the Sea is ready to undertake the next phase of their work and establish a permanent space.
‘The success of the Touch Tank Hut, feedback from our visitors and supporters, and our research conducted over the last 5 years has indicated that there is a strong desire for a larger, permanent community aquarium in the area, ” says Magali Grégoire, Back to the Sea’s Founder and Executive Director.
In 2019, Back to the Sea received funding for the completion this feasibility study from Scotiabank and District 5 Municipal Funds (through a participatory vote night held by Councillor Sam Austin).
The RFP was developed by Deloitte, who worked closely with the Back to the Sea team to narrow-in on their future vision and determine the priority elements for the feasibility study. Deloitte completed this scope of work as part of their Community Advisory Projects, a pro bono initiative.
The deadline for submitting proposals is 5:00 PM (AST) on Friday March 27th, 2020.
